We're going to see the Smashing Pumpkins play here in just a few weeks. It's an odd feeling - I was never a huge fan, though I do like some of their songs pretty well. Now I'm getting really excited, but why not? They are legends of alt-rock. Dreams is even more excited, being a big fan all along. So now, what do I do for three weeks?
Listen to some music, I suppose.

...is my memory. I spot things on a daily basis, either things I actually see, or those I think of, that I want to put here. 90% of those never make it here, at least. And there is a reason - I forget them all. I can feel the feeling I get when I have a post idea after I have forgotten whatever it was... but that idea never comes back. To combat this, I am going to fight back- with a pen and pad. I'm going to write shit down and then write it down again, here. I should apologize, in case you find yourself here again and you read something transferred from mind to paper to web. I'm sure it'll be fascinating and all. I'm also sure this site is now 20% about this very topic (I can't remember but that sounds about right). So look forward to lots more of... that. I look forward to delivering it.

This not fits in multiple categories. The topic applies to the first - The Dark Knight was excellent. The whole movie was good, but damn Heath Ledger as the Joker was amazing - like Hannibal Lecter in a clown suit and completely, utterly unhinged. I never realized how good an actor he was - It's a shame he died so young.
The other thing I wanted to mention was about another movie we watched yesterday, In the Name of the King. Uwe Boll is the Worst. Director. Ever. Someday I hope some MST3K/Film Crew/Cinematic Titanic type group of people rakes it over the coals. My best hope may well be RiffTrax. I have high hopes. Anyhow, Uwe Boll is the worst director alive. And a jackass. Anywho, I don't likes him.

I am really tired of a certain rock song by certain rock stars bitching about how they want to be big stars. You already are. Stop the whining. Also your song pretty much sucks.
Like a country song played backwards, my wife and dog have arrived and now the household is complete. It was lonely, just the cat and me. Not much fun. Now our little family is back together and reunited with our stuff... where did all this come from? It seems like we have a metric ton of junk that we forgot and some nice new items that we can't find anywhere. We actually miss how the place used to be mostly empty. That feeling is gone.
We don't miss living in Florida. Family, yes. The place itself, no. Moving is a giant pain, and will be again in six weeks when we do it again... don't ask. At least we're not going back to Florida.
I am enjoying being a programmer. I might actually be good at this someday.

...because the site hit a major milestone and I didn't notice until it went another 10% beyond that.
Surreal Dreams has hit 1,000,000 page views. And then it hit 1,100,000. And then I noticed. So I guess I ought to get in here and pay a touch more attention. Anyhow, thanks for coming by (and using FireFox - seems like a lot of you are using it these days). I'll try and post something worth reading/looking at so that you're not scratching your head wondering why you came. That's not really what I'm going for here. :)

I have the sad duty of using Windows Vista these days. I've been using it for 1 week now, and I had my first Vista BSOD. This seems eerily familiar... to the older, really sucktastic Windows version.
Way to go, MS. Push new boundaries.

VA is VERY far from FL. But we made it.
Very tired, Frank out.

I kinda fell apart there on the blogging. I've been busy, like everyone always says. Anyhow, I am moving today - from Florida, back to Virginia.

I think that last blog post wore out Mrs. Surreal, so I volunteered to write about the next few days here in Islamorada. The blogging has, understandably, fallen behind as a result. She mentioned that she took on logging this trip as a way to show interest in my logging. She may not realize it, but part of this blog I lovingly neglect is to show my interest in writing and literature - interests of hers. See, I "write" up this so-called "literature" and post it here for you to ingest. It's mostly writing and less of that other big word.
Anyhow, I'll have to come up with a better interest of hers to look into - or rather one I can do better at. So, without further delay or needless words, like those, we spent some time fishing, I turned colors, and we had lots of fun. Let's get to the real story and pictures.

If you have ever been on a road trip with Frank, then you are probably familiar with his tradition of making a trip log that documents all of the ridiculous things that everyone says, and sees, while on the road. It's an amusing way to pass the time in the car, especially once delirium sets in after several hours of driving. In the newlywed spirit of embracing each other's interests, I have decided to channel Frank's love of all things web and create a similar trip log on his blog (with his help, of course) where we can share photos of our honeymoon. It probably won't be funny like his typical trip logs, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. Read on...

Yesterday! I'm taking a short breather before we finish packing for the honeymoon, and then we are off to Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
To see some photos by our rocking photogprapher, look here.
It was all an amazing experience, and it all went off perfectly. I will do my best to upload photos as our week in paradise progresses. Right now, I gotta go!

I share a birthday with Bert I. Gordon, infamous director of a pile of B sci-fi movies. This can be no coincidence. This can only mean that there is something special about that particular day that gives a person a special appreciation for these bad movies, be that they are enjoyable, or, more likely, amusing. Right, Bert? What else could it be? I mean, that's science.

I did - I think it was Earth Versus the Spider. Or was that Earth Vs. Soup? Whatever. I have seen it before, but this is real! Another case of giant insects attacking, just like that huge fly attacking the volcano. What next? A Deadly Mantis in NYC? A rampaging Box Turtle?
This photo comes from NASA while trying to launch a shuttle four days ago. They had a delay - spider damage, perhaps? You decide.

It's official - Florida is messing with me. It was 80°F for the last 2 days. Christmas is less than 2 weeks away. It feels like it should be mid September, not mid December. I can't tell if it should be football season or baseball season. Or what month it is.

Child's Play

Since I mentioned my Christmas list, I'd like to mention another much more important (and substantially larger) Christmas wish list - the one made possible by Penny Arcade's charity Child's Play. It's goal is to donate toys, games and money to children's hospitals so that the kids stuck there for long periods of time can pas it by with some distracting fun instead of boredom. It's a great charity and they've managed to brighten a lot of days for an unimaginable number of kids around the world. You can donate cash or buy something right off a kids wish list. Either way, you're doing a very nice thing. Dreams and I will be making our selection shortly.

I keep getting asked for my Christmas list. And I can't come up with squat.
I mean, shouldn't this be easy? I can ask for anything I want. It's just a wish list. It's not binding or anything. So far I have some MST3K and Film Crew DVDs, a calendar, a shirt, and this jellyfish thing.
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with me?

Could it be that the Gods of bad movies smile upon me and all MYSTies worldwide? Cinematic Titanic is coming. The cast members of MST3K who were not involved in the Film Crew are doing another project of a similar nature, and the start date is so very soon! December 10th, in fact. The first film title has not been revealed, but I imagine some horror from the depths of Hollywood. I mean, they've made literally thousands of bad movies, so it's not like there's a shortage. It's all very exciting. Bring it on, Joel!

Guitar Hero 3 rocks. No big surprise. I like that I can play, in the game, with the GH controller. The music is good, and the "shop tracks" that you buy are some of the best so far (Though GH2's Thunderhorse is a very, very special song to me). The array of available guitars is fairly stunning - there must be 30 or more. The performance probably looks better too - what I have seen so far, peeking away from the Fret Bar every so often, is impressive.

When did this site become a target? This is just me, my stuff, some iffy photos of mine, some good ones of Badris, and a dusty old gallery of 3D art. Why are spammers so hell-bent on dropping anchor here? Over 500 IP addresses banned, but of course they keep coming. A few even learned to comment in my new system, but that's what moderation is for.

Your cold medicine product seems to work OK. I'm not sure, it's always debatable for me. No, I'm writing about your packaging. Specifically, the part that claims it's "specially-formulated to be virtually taste-free." In fact, this product is the strongest, nastiest tasting goop I have ever encountered. You can ruin virtually any beverage with it, hot or cold! I just want to call you people out for your filthy lie, which anyone knows as soon as they follow the directions and lick the spoon. Revolting. You get the same shudder you get from cough syrup, only stronger and longer. It's making me wretch right now.
Note: OK, I have to admit - hot coco covers the taste allright. Hot tea, less so. But both do so WAY better than a diet coke. |

Second Try This was a later attempt at improving upon my first go with POV-Ray. It's got more interest, but both are still the cliche spheres over checkerboards that every rayrtacer is bound by fate to produce. |

Ornaments Here's some holiday cheer for you... It's festive, bright, and it takes me back to my ray-tracing roots, with shiny spheres. |
